Introducing myself. Tony Clark

My name is Tony Clark, ex UK, ex scooter owner from way back, a Lambretta golden pacemaker, I'm told they are quite rare these days. Recently on a trip to UK I went to the Isle of Wight with a friend who has a Classic Vespa. The classic scooter rally was on, It wa a thrill to be back amongst the scooters after all these years. Middle agers in their parkas, Harrington jackets and desert boots, I felt quite at home. Anyway coming back to Australia I thought I would like to get myself a Lambretta and join a local scooter club. I saw an LI150 Special with union jacks on the panels driving through Frankston earlier this week which has spured me on to try to make contact with some scooter enthusiasts to try to get some advice on how to start.
Well of course I need to start with getting a scooter. I'd like to get a Lambretta, preferably, Li3, GT, TV, SX, in that elk. I'd prefer to get something and refurbish it, partly because of the cost and partly because I'd like to do it, but if the right scooter came along at an affordable price I'd take that. Ive been told to stay away from anything second hand from Vietnam but that Italy or Spain iwould be a good source. if you can overcome the language difficulties. Of course there is the UK but I've been told that unrefurbished scooters are starting to be hard to come by and it is expensive to ship it down here to Australia. I believe India is another source but not sure if this is in the same bucket as Vietnam or would be an ok place to get one. Having said all that I would appreciate any advice members can give me on where and how to get hold of a Lambretta, also the problems involved with getting one into the country and registered locally.
Cheers

Hi Tony
Welcome to the crusaders...the Lammie you saw may well have been Steve's ( Snowy) and Steve would be the best one to make contact with as he is part of a syndicate that is bringing Lammys into OZ from Indian for members ....GP200 if thats of interest to you...and Steve can advise you on cost and Dave can help on experience as he took delivery of the first one that arrived.I have a Lammy that I brought in from Vietnam but have had to put in a new GP200 engine/electronics and so on...and its taken me two years to make the changes but Im getting there.

anyhow Derek may also be another good connection with help on a possbile lead for a Lammy.

once again welcome onboard and good luck in getting hooked up with a Lammy.

cheers Mike

Nice choice of scoot Tony,
Good luck getting an unrestored one, but they do come along, its just the waiting that hurts.
India is the go rather than Vietnam, the paint is better from Vn but the finished scoot is better from India.
Lambrettas do come up now and again in Australia, but be prepared to pay $2000 for a basket case and $6-8000 for a good one. Vespas are everywhere and it is hard to tell their origins until you own it for a while. Be suss on any VBB or VBC.
Keep talking to Crusader members and you will get pointed in the right direction.
Cheers Dave

Tony - just checking that you aren't the Tony Clark who lived in Wanneroo, Perth? Big Vega/Cometa/Lui fan?

If you are and have moved to Vic, let me know mate. A few people been trying to contact you about Vega parts; Starstream engines etc.

Hi Tony welcome in, not sure where you're living but I'm in Langwarrin along with Yorkie and Gaz (the Rev) preaches from Frankston.
If you fancy heading into a meeting one week drop us a line and maybe a chance of travelling in together.

Fellas,
I need some advice. I am planning to get one of the restored GP200 scooters out of India. I have a quote from the supplier and I'm not sure what needs to be the first action. Is the sequence that I pay the first installment payment up front, then get the serial number and photos of the scooter from the supplier, then contact the Australian government import agency to get a permit to bring it into the country. Or, do I get the serial number information first, get an import permit and then hand over the money and finalise the deal.

Appreciate anyones help here.

Cheers

Sam has given you good advice...no use forking out your hard earned and finding out that you are unable to get an import approval.

Hi Tony
I have already been thru this process and Sam is spot on get the frame and engine serial number exactly as its printed on the frame and engine....make sure they double check the details they are providing you with....then check the numbers against the production details that are available for cross reference on the web and spend your $50 for a import permit application/approval.... once you have satisfied yourself that you can import and the scoot is what they say it is ..then move to go
happy to help with any advise you maybe unsure of,if I can help.
cheers Mike

Tony
just another thought to pass on just in case you are not aware of it...once the scoot arrives and you need to clear from customs etc...buget for about $700-$1000 for this as its an expense you have very little control over but its all part and parcel of importing.

Crusaders Import Guide

Importing the red GP200 led me to make this check list for anyone considering buying from Rohan, or indeed from just about anyone else:

SCOOTER IMPORT GUIDE

1) Do NOT import any scooter without obtaining import approval from the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government (Infrastructure).

Phone: 1800 815 272 or +612 2 6274 7506, Fax +612 2 6274 6013, email Vimports@infrastructure.gov.au. Otherwise you will be up for BIG import charges and lots of delay, probably a year or so.

2) Ensure you get pictures of the frame number prior to completing the VIA (Vehicle Import Approval), the vehicle you import MUST have the number you give on the VIA

3) Before importing or completing the VIA read the Australian Government guide VSB10 on importing a vehicle

4) Do not try and under quote on your VIA the price of the scooter, if you do and get caught the scooter will be confiscated and sold at auction

5) Obtain photographs of the scooter prior to restoration, to ensure it is straight and not a cut and shunt, it will look shabby, that’s OK so long as it is straight

6) Make sure the new engine fitted is going to be a genuine SIL (this is very important)

7) Obtain photographs at each stage of the renovation

8) Pay for the renovation in instalments after seeing the photos, we paid 1/3 deposit and then two instalments after seeing photos.

9) Make sure the scooter is packed in an approved timber box, the wood we received ours in was not approved and even though we had a fumigation certificate it was not accepted by Australian customs and we had to pay $300 to have it burnt.

10) Make sure the scooter is shipped with no fuel and no gearbox oil, Australian quarantine could check this and charge you for disposal.

11) Make sure the scooter is not wrapped in bubble wrap for shipping, bubble wrap sweats even when the paint is dry

12) Expect some small problems, minor wiring problems, a few loose bolts and cable stretch, these are nothing really, but there will always be some minor problems.

13) Use a customs agent, you can try and do it yourself, but AQUIS may treat your import better if it is being handled by a reputable clearing agent they know, rather than by you, who they do not.

14) In Australia if a scooter has been manufactured after 1974 then it will need an Engineer’s report and will require indicators and other things to be fitted. Might be a good idea to ensure Rohan restores a scooter for you that was originally manufactured prior to 1975.

Regards
Steve “Snowy” Bardsley

Yorkie,

Have a look at:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/2F4D64FE-B1A5-48D1-B848-19CD5F817...

You will need indicators and front brake lever switch. It may be possible to fit a bracket under the headset where the mirrors fit. Something similar could be done on the rear using the number plate holes. That way you don't spoil the lines of the Rally, and you could remove them after a roadworthy and chance it.
The lever switch is more problematic, but I'm sure there is a work around.
Try and get a roadworthy without it, if they knock it back it is only the cost of the RWC check again.
Cheers
Richard

Bar end indicators are also a possibility. My Primavera has those, and a small pair of lights at the back, and they run off the 6v system.

Thanks fellas. Just one question still. Do I apply for and get the the import permit in my grubby hand before I hand over the money to Rohan in India, or do I pay for the scooter and apply while the refurbishment is taking place but before it is shipped.

Hi Tony
I guess the position is if you dont get a permit to import then you may loose any monies pre-paid unless you have a deal whereby any monies pre-paid will be refunded in the event you get a knockback on the import permit,On the other hand you maybe waiting 4-6weeks before you get an answer and that could be time lost in the rebuild if you wait until you get import approval before going ahead.I paid a 10% deposit upfront and final payment of the balance (90%)on completion....see what terms the supplier is prepared to offer. In putting up the10% upfront I thought the risk of loosing $400 was what I was prepared to loose if it went pair shaped..the supplier will look for some goodwill upfront so he knows your kosher and likewise the other way around...its all on trust to some degree....but with Rohan the club thru Snowy has had some experience to draw on in terms of the end product and whether he stuck to the terms as agreed from the outset....whatever you do,do what sits right for you after taking onboad all the advise gained from as many that can offer it to you, good luck with it.As others may well offer a differant view
cheers Mike

Hi Fellas, just a small point on imports, I was told by my shipping agent that you could pay $90.00 per day in storage fees by customs if you don't have that import licence. Cheers, Deg.
